Manchester United vs Chelsea Match Preview

First place Manchester United will host second place Chelsea on Saturday in what may well prove to be the defining match of the season.

Wayne Rooney is helped off at the end of the match against Bayern MunichManchester United’s midweek encounter with Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League Quarter Final tie was a disaster as United gave away a winning goal in 2nd half stoppage time while Wayne Rooney almost simultaneously rolled his ankle and had to be helped off the pitch.

The gravity of United’s predicament is clear. They have an opportunity to recover from the 2-1 loss to Bayern when they meet the Bavarians at Old Trafford next week. But Wayne Rooney probably won’t be there to help them.

Rooney's ankle is sprained, and although initial estimates suggested his convalescence would require some two to four weeks, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been reluctant to reveal anything.

More importantly for United, however, Rooney won’t be available for the Red Devil’s massive league match against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday. Yet Saturday’s winner--if there is one--probably wins the league!

Points are like gold right now

United hold the league lead by just a point going into the weekend, and they’ll be determined to avenge their 1-0 loss to the Londoners at Stamford Bridge in November. A win over Chelsea on Saturday would give United a four point lead and allow them some breathing room should they fail to get maximum points in the run-in to the end of the season.

Considering that United are yet to play Manchester City and Tottenham before the season ends those four points could be worth their weight in gold.

Beating Chelsea, however, will be a big task, even at Old Trafford. Without Rooney in the lineup United have often failed to impress. The England striker has 34 goals in all competitions this season and has seemed unstoppable.

Prior to the midweek loss in Germany United had gone seven games undefeated, scoring 19 goals and letting in only two in that time. Rooney scored nine of those 19.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will undoubtedly turn to Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov inManchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov. Rooney’s absence. The Bulgarian’s goal tally this year so far pales in comparison to Rooney’s magnificent haul, but there is no doubt that Berbatov is a quality striker.

Although Berbatov’s commitment has been questioned from time-to-time, especially in light of his £30 million transfer fee, the Bulgarian has been impressive in recent weeks, and scored two in United’s 0-4 win over Bolton last weekend.

Still, against Chelsea, and in subsequent matches until Rooney’s return, Berbatov will be carrying the full weight of Manchester United’s hopes and aspirations for the championship this season. It could make, or break, his reputation among the pantheon of Manchester United gods.

London Calling

Chelsea owner Roman AbramovichChelsea owner Roman Abramovich must be licking his chops at the prospect of his club facing a Rooney-less Manchester United in what may well be the deciding match of the season.

Having crashed surprisingly out of the Champions League in the Round of 16 thanks to a resilient Inter Milan squad, Chelsea will be looking to exorcise their demons and prove they are the rightful claimants to the English throne. Except for a small matter an FA Cup Semi-Final upcoming, the Blues can now turn their focus almost entirely on the league.

Chelsea have trailed United for some weeks now, but for much of that time they possessed a game in hand and thus were well-placed to take the top spot. All they needed to do was continue to win and the league was theirs.

But Blackburn Rovers forced a shocking draw with the Blues 10 days ago. Chelsea’s game in hand was effectively nullified as a result and the Blues found themselves chasing the lead.

Like a wounded bear Chelsea came back in subsequent games and tore the competition asunder. They gobbled up Portsmouth at Fratton Park, winning that one 0-5, then last weekend they destroyed Aston Villa, embarrassingly thrashing Villa 7-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Fate in their own hands

http://www.watchlivesoccerblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/watch-chelsea-vs-MU-.jpg

Both teams come into the weekend’s match with injuries to key players. United won’t have Rooney, Hargreaves, Brown, Owen, O’Shea, Anderson or Welbeck. Chelsea are missing Ivanovic, Carvalho, Bosingwa, Essien and Ashley Cole.

Yet both squads possess talent pools deep enough to field quality selections even when injuries are rife.

Injuries aside, each club controls its own destiny coming into the weekend’s match at Old Trafford, and each will see a win as essential. For Manchester United the three points adds cushion to their lead should they concoct to wobble in the run in. For Chelsea the three points means they overtake United and then it’s simply a case on hanging on through the following five games.

Neither side would find a draw to be palatable, for that would open the door to Arsenal again. Indeed, a draw would be especially abhorrent to Chelsea, whom Arsenal could catch were they to win at the weekend.

Can Manchester United beat Chelsea without Wayne Rooney in their lineup? Absolutely, of this there can be no doubt. One could point to the 0-4 win over Bolton last week as an example of Manchester United’s potential for firepower without Wayne Rooney.

Fair enough, United can clearly put the ball in the onion bag without Rooney in the line up. But let’s face a simple fact: Bolton is not Chelsea.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester United Match Preview

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy displayed a fine madness and got tricky with his line-up against Manchester United last time out. Will he do the same again?

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy (right). There is madness in his method.Wolverhampton manager Mick McCarthy’s sleight-of-hand with his line up was the main talking point of his club’s previous game with Manchester United.

McCarthy fielded a controversial squad against United at Old Trafford that saw 10 changes from their previous match. In short, McCarthy had fielded a reserve squad against the mighty Red Devils.

McCarthy’s reserves were casually thumped 3-0. Had the man lost his managerial marbles?

Perhaps not all…although there was madness in his method!

Later, under post-match interrogations by the press and the FA, McCarthy revealed his motive: Rest the first team boys. (They were unlikely to beat United anyway.) And with rest, maybe they could actually win a game later on.

A week later McCarthy’s well-rested boys beat rivals Burnley!

Madness…? Perhaps! But what a fine madness McCarthy manifested.

Arsenal vs Burnley Match Preview

It’s almost top of the league versus almost bottom of the league as third place Arsenal host 19th place Burnley at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday; one is fighting for honors, the other for survival.

Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey. Broken leg against StokeArsenal’s victory celebration last week following the come-from-behind 1-3 win over Stoke City at Britannia stadium was overshadowed by the terrible injury suffered by young Welsh international Aaron Ramsey, whose leg was broken in a challenge by Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross.

The horror of the incident was such that replays were not shown. But the looks of the players on the pitch told all. The incident surely reminded the Gunners of the injuries suffered by teammates Eduardo and Abou Diaby in recent years.

Conspiracy theory

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is convinced that the Shawcross challenge is a symptom of overly physical tactics other teams adopt when playing his club.

Others among the Arsenal contingent, however, are using Ramsey’s misfortune as a rallying call for a redoubled effort to win the league for their fallen teammate. It’s certainly a more positive response to the event and could have beneficial consequences.

The Gunners are currently in third place, two points behind Manchester United and three behind Chelsea.

Easy run in for Arsenal?

With 10 games left in their season the fixture list for Arsenal could be characterized as favorable. Seven of their upcoming matches are against clubs residing in the lower half of the table.

Burnley this weekend is one such club. Hull, West Ham, Wolves, Wigan and Blackburn are also upcoming.

Against second-to-last Burnley at the Emirates Stadium the Gunners will have a good opportunity to pick up three points. And although this may not allow them to overtake Manchester United, it will certainly allow them to keep the pace while they hope for United and Chelsea to falter as they have each done this season already.

Besides Ramsey and long term injury Robin van Persie, Arsenal are likely to be without Gallas, Gibbs and Diaby, all of whom are injured, as well as Alex Song who is out through suspension.

Survival at stake for Burnley

Burnley is fighting for Premier League survival when they meet Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Manager Brian Laws would undoubtedly prefer the game to be at Turf Moor where the Clarets have a much better record.

Of their 16 losses this season only three were at home. One of those three was a stunner last week against Portsmouth, the only club lower on the table than Burnley. The corollary? Thirteen of their 16 losses were away from home. Against Arsenal this weekend they’ll be away from home.

Will the vintage claret be ready?

The Clarets last encounter with Arsenal produced a 1-1 draw at the Turf Moor, with age-defying ScotBurnley's vintage claret,...Graham Alexander Graham Alexander equalizing from the penalty spot. But going into this weekend’s match that particular vintage claret has been out for five games with a calf injury.

Yet manger Brian Laws is hopeful that Alexander will be available for the Arsenal match.

"We have missed his vocal support on the pitch and his organisation,” said Laws. "That's something we are going to need because we need to be organised and we need to have good communication, particularly with the way Arsenal play” reiterated the manager somewhat redundantly.

Injuries

Scotland international Steven Fletcher is also questionable for the match against Arsenal having broken a bone in his hand during training with the Scotland squad. Defenders Caldwell and Kalvenes and midfielder Chris McCann are also listed on the injury list.

So far in 2010 the Clarets have averaged one win a month in all competitions, so they are due one in March. It’s unlikely to come at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, however.
