Real Madrid vs Athletic Bilbao Match Preview

All matches will kick off at 19:00 GMT on Saturday. In the pick of the day, Sevilla and Barcelona will lock horns at the Sanchez Pizjuan. At the Santiago Bernabeu, however, Real Madrid will have a tough battle to overcome against Athletic Bilbao. Can Los Blancos punish Los Leones who took away all three points from them at the San Mames back in mid-January?

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain, and Rafael Van der Vaart celebrate together against Valencia.Real Madrid – Hoping And Fighting

Barcelona’s Juan Laporta insists that the pressure is on Real Madrid as La Liga is two match-days away from its end. The Spanish giants, in the meantime, prefer to remain hopeful that the current leaders will drop points against Sevilla. Real Madrid are actually one point behind Barcelona; if the Catalans complete the double over Los Nervionenses and if Madrid fail to defeat Bilbao, then the race for La Liga title will be well and truly over for Florentino Perez's $ 300 Million team.

As usual, especially since their Clasico loss, Real Madrid’s mission is to win at all cost no matter the situation. During the week, Los Blancos triumphed 4-1 over Mallorca thanks to the major influence of hat-trick hero Cristiano Ronaldo. The world’s most expensive player was praised by the coach as being “the embodiment of Real Madrid’s spirit”. This vital comeback victory offered Los Blancos a mental boost ahead of this weekend’s crucial home encounter against Athletic Bilbao.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini gave his thoughts, calling upon his players’ focus:

"The match against Bilbao will not be easy. We have to win and focus on ourselves since whatever happens in Sevilla will not have anything to do with us."

His statement was also echoed by midfielder Esteban Granero who explained:

"It would be a mistake not to focus on our match only. Barcelona's result will be meaningless if we don't win. Still, we will keep an eye on Sevilla because this weekend may be decisive."

Athletic Bilbao – European Aspirations Will MotivateAthletic Bilbao's Llorente celebrating with his mates after scoring an early goal against Real Madrid at the San Mames.

Los Leones have 51 points, and they are one point behind Villarreal and Getafe who both possess 52 points. These three teams are vying for a Europa League spot and with 6 points still at stake, anything could happen. Athletic Bilbao are keen to end their season on a wonderful note and only a 6th place finish will guarantee them that.

They’ll need to gather their forces and bring down Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu if they want to keep their European hopes alive. Defender Ander Iturraspe seems very much aware of the situation in which Athletic Bilbao find themselves. Looking at the game, he underlined the Spanish giant’s greatness and compared it to his side’s hard challenge.

“We’ll have plenty to prove at the Bernabeu. They [Real Madrid] have high standard attacking players. They usually have no mercy if they get their chances. We will have to be very, very good. We’ll need to have a bit of luck and also, we won’t have to give them opportunities. Actually, they end up taking them more than they do not.

“Against teams like Real Madrid, you have to take their chances. Otherwise, you pay dearly. This happened to us against Barcelona. We had plenty of opportunities. But Madrid will have chances because they are one of the best teams on the planet.”

It will be interesting to see whether Athletic Bilbao’s Europa League aspirations are strong enough to crash Real Madrid’s La Liga title dream.

Sevilla vs Barcelona Match Preview

With only two matches left in La Liga, the title race has appeared to be hotter than ever at the top of the table, but Barcelona can once again stamp their authority in the Primera División by defeating Sevilla at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Saturday.

Sevilla fighting against Barcelona in the Copa del ReySevilla - Facts and Stats from the home side

The Andalusian club has managed to take a Champions League place in the top four with 60 points, placed ahead of 5th place Mallorca who have 59 points. Sevilla have proved to be a difficult side this season, although they have also shown a lot of struggle in their league campaign.

Sevilla only have 18 wins in 36 league games which include 6 draws and 12 losses. Their home record looks acceptable, having triumphed 14 times at home, drawn once, and lost thrice. It is thus away from home that their tests weaken them, as they can only boast of 3 wins in their name, and 7 draws as well as 8 defeats.

Luckily, their game this weekend will be decided at home against La Liga leaders Barcelona, and Sevilla can look ahead to retaining their recent good shape so as to keep their opportunities of playing in the Champions League next season. Nevertheless, results popping-out of their last matches show what could be referred to as inconsistency, in view of the fact that they have snatched 9 points over their last 15 possible due to 2 stoppable failures.

Last 5 games

Apr 13: Valladolid 2-1 Sevilla
Apr 17: Sevilla 3-0 Sporting Gijon
Apr 25: Getafe 4-3 Sevilla
May 02: Sevilla 3-1 Atletico Madrid
May 05: Racing Santander 1-5 Sevilla

Barcelona star Lionel Messi against Diego Perroti in the Sevilla vs Barcelona gameBarcelona – Facts and Stats from the away side

La Liga title holders are still under the pressure of Real Madrid who look hungry enough to eat up all 6 remaining possible points in the Spanish First Division. With only one point separating them from Los Blancos, Barcelona have no right to relax. Conversely, they can only continue the battle and pour out their blood for at least 180 more minutes.

Barcelona will be packing their bags to travel to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, but the Blaugrana could face a negative surprise, seeing that their away record only seems to be as positive as it is mainly because of excessive determination. The league favorites have won 12 games away from home, drawn 5, and lost 1. Their defeat came on February 14, when they suffered a setback in Madrid following a powerless starting line-up from Manager Pep Guardiola.

On this occasion, the Catalans will not be presented any choice. The only obligation which they will have to follow will be to answer the cries of their Madrid-fearing fans by getting closer to the title, using a win. Barcelona have stolen 4 wins out of their last 5 challenges, and below is the list of their results in their last 450 minutes on the pitch in La Liga:

Apr 14: Barcelona 3-0 Deportivo La Coruña
Apr 17: Espanyol 0-0 Barcelona
Apr 24: Barcelona 3-1 Xerez
May 1: Villarreal 1-4 Barcelona
May 4: Barcelona 4-1 Tenerife

Sevilla keeper Palop vs MessiiPalop vs Lionel Messi

Sevilla goalkeeper and Barcelona ace Lionel Messi will face each for the eighth time in the Primera Division, but the fact that Leo has been able to score 7 times against the goalie is evident enough for fans to consider Little Messi as one of Palop’s biggest opponents, in terms of individual display. Messi got his first goal against Palop on October 15, 2006, when he scored Barcelona's third goal against Sevilla in the 80th minute as the Catalans triumphed 3-1 at the Camp Nou. He then scored 2 more goals on September 22 the year after in a 2-1 victory over Sevilla, with both goals scored within 6 minutes.

In 2008, on November 29, Messi again clinched a double in a 3-0 win against Manuel Jimenez’s club. He did not fail to exhibit his goalscoring skills on the 16th of January this year, when he placed two goals past Palop in La Liga to help Barcelona enter the winter break as La Liga leaders thanks to a 4-0 win.

Messi however could not score in the Copa del Rey against Sevilla, and after a 2-2 loss on away goals, Barcelona suffered their first competition exit for the first time since the departure of ex-coach Frank Rijkaard. On Saturday, Palop and Messi fight each other again, and the winner between the two men will surely emerge from the winning team.

Sevilla vs Barcelona – Head To Head

In their 5 last La Liga meetings, Barcelona have never lost a game against Sevilla. The title holders have won 4 of their last games against the Andalusians, and drawn one. The highest number of goals they have scored against Sevilla is 4, while they have made 3 clean sheets, since September 22, 2007.

22 Sep, 2007: Barcelona 2-1 Sevilla
09 Feb, 2008: Sevilla 1-1 Barcelona
22 Nov, 2008: Sevilla 0-3 Barcelona
22 Apr, 2009: Barcelona 4-0 Sevilla
16 Jan, 2010: Barcelona 4-0 Sevilla

La Liga Official logoLa Liga Standings (Top 5) – May 07, 2010

Barcelona – 93 points

Real Madrid – 92 points

Valencia – 68 points

Sevilla – 60 points

Mallorca – 59 points

A loss or a draw for Barcelona might end their titles hopes if Real Madrid take their chances till the end of Day 38, but on the side of Sevilla, a loss or even a draw might also end their hopes of playing in the UEFA Champions League next season.

Real Madrid vs Sevilla Match Preview

On Saturday night at 21:00 GMT, the Santiago Bernabeu will host the most eagerly anticipated clash of the weekend.

Real Madrid players reacting in despair after Sevilla scores in a 2-1 La Liga defeat to Los Nervionenses.Real Madrid will come up against Sevilla as Los Blancos continue their title hunt and as Los Nervionenses aim to complete the double on their rivals.

Real Madrid’s biggest test at home

Real Madrid will have to face the huge task of defeating 4th place Sevilla on Saturday.

Los Blancos possess the strongest home record in La Liga this season but it is also true that they are yet to play any of the other three teams in the top four at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The list includes Barcelona, Valencia, and Sevilla whom they'll face this weekend only.

Real Madrid lost the first leg of this fixture 2-1 at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and a repeat of this fate will definitely not be acceptable on Day 25 for title contenders Los Blancos.

As La Liga edges closer to its latter stages, the Spanish giants are keen to pile up more pressure on the leaders Barcelona.

The gap could even widen from two points to five ahead of this Real Madrid vs Sevilla clash if the Catalans defeat Almeria in the 19:00 GMT kick off. Slipping against Sevilla is therefore not an option for Real Madrid.

Now with the UEFA Champions League last sixteen second leg fixture against Lyon coming up next week, the Spanish giants would want to avoid any kind of demoralization by triumphing over Los Nervionenses.

Real Madrid are indeed on a great run of 6 La Liga wins on the trot.

They wrote off Villarreal and Tenerife lately with humiliating score lines and they aim to keep it up – not only to boost their confidence ahead of their European clash against Lyon where they’ll need to overturn a 1-0 deficit, but also to keep their hopes of clinching La Liga title alive.

Playmaker Cristiano Ronaldo stressed Real Madrid’s need to defeat Sevilla, saying:

“It is going to be a very difficult game. But we’ll be playing at the Bernabeu and we have to win if we want to win the league.”

Sevilla ready to terrorize Real MadridSevilla players erupt in joy as the celebrate their goal against Real Madrid.

Ten men Sevilla lost ground last week after being held goalless at home to Athletic Bilbao. Commentating on the outcome of the game, Coach Manolo Jimenez rued bad luck for letting his side drop two precious points.

But he made it clear that the Bilbao match was now part of the past.

“Our mission is to finish third but this point is not what we deserved,” the manager stated.

“Now our minds are set on what promises to be a very difficult game at the Bernabeu.”

For midfielder Renato, Sevilla will have to play courageously to beat Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“We’ll have to attack them,” Renato explained.

“We’ll have to cause them damage and we will try to take them head on in order to achieve a good result.”

Echoing Renato’s comments, Sevilla’s Frederico Fazio told AS:

“We have to be focused, not just because we’ll be facing players like Cristiano Ronaldo. Actually, we would have to be just as concentrated as if we were up against Soldado or Aduriz.”

Can Sevilla put an end to Real Madrid’s perfect home record in La Liga this season?

Sevilla have never held a team to a draw away from home this season.

They either win or they lose. Actually, Los Nervionenses have played 11 matches away from the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and their form is far from being consistent.

They’ve won only six times away from home and if they lose on Saturday, they’ll be heading for their 6th away defeat in La Liga.

Almería vs Barcelona Match Preview

Barcelona will have the opportunity to temporarily expand their lead to 5 points when they face Almería away to the Estadio Mediterraneo this Saturday.

At first glance, Almeria are clearly the underdogs; but to some extent, they will have the power to decide the future of the Catalans, as the situation is plain.

Holding Barcelona to a draw would be enough to let Real Madrid join Barcelona at the top of La Liga if Los Blancos overcome Sevilla on the same night.

Almeria playing against Racing Santander in La LigaAlmeria – Mission Possible?

Almeria might not have a great name with a set of star players at their disposal, but their Spanish record in recent weeks has not been as bad as one could think.

In their last 5 games

Almeria have remained unbeaten in their last 5 matches after they lost 1-0 away to Sevilla on January 23 earlier this year.

They drew 1-1 against Valladolid on January 31, and they showed even much more fire 7 days later as they defeated Sporting Gijon 3-1 at home.

A week later, they travelled to Getafe for a tough encounter, but not even the Castellans could humble them; the score line eventually ended in a 2-2 draw.

1-0 was the result of their next game at home against Atletico Madrid in front of 10,000 supporters in the third week of February.

Just recently, Almeria silenced Racing Santander by winning by 2 goals to nil away from home.

A football referee showing a yellow cardIn general, their mission this weekend should not seem too difficult for them, especially not in view of their consistent and threatening form.

The advantages

Going into this game, Almeria have two major advantages.

The first benefit comes from the fact that they will be playing as the home side. Fatigue and intimidation can therefore not be excuses for their side, for on the contrary – they will be fighting the league leaders with full strength.

The second advantage is that, as a result of a nice behavior against Racing Santander last weekend, Almeria only have one player being marked with a yellow card. All the rest of their players should be fit and free to come up against Barcelona in perfect condition.

Barcelona – Keeping the authority

Lately, the Barcelona football club has been receiving critics from both their fans and general football lovers. Followers have been complaining to the team about their unstable form which has given their rivals Real Madrid a huge mental boost.

The stumbling block which has been confronting the Blaugrana has also put in doubts Barcelona’s dream of winning the Spanish Primera Division as well as the UEFA Champions League.

A convincing comeback from this unexpected predicament is urgent at the moment, and the whole state of affairs has now become a “do or die” matter for the Barcelona players, as well as for the managing staff.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola gesturing during a gamePep Guardiola – We are back to our best

Barcelona had to struggle to find a crucial 2-1 victory against Malaga last weekend at the Camp Nou, as a late goal from FIFA Player of the Year Lionel Messi secured the 3 points for the European giants.

This win kept Barca’s lead at the top of La Liga, and coach Pep Guardiola believes that such an important triumph is the proof of his team’s restoration.

“We probably had one of our best matches at home, and we can say that we’ve done very well,” said Guardiola.

“We have been much better than in previous encounters.

“We have found our form back and we played amazingly, so this is the path to follow now.”

Almeria vs Barcelona – Previous meetings

Thierry Heny and Samuel Eto'o of Barcelona celebrating after scoring a goal against Almeria at the Camp Nou in La LigaAlmeria and Barcelona have met 5 times since the 28th of October 2007, and in approximately 450 minutes, Barca have netted 12 goals – as they have never lost against the Andalusians.

Barcelona’s best victory came back in October 2008, when Thierry Henry and Dani Alves joined Samuel Eto’o – then at the club – in the 5-0 demolition of Almeria.

Almeria have only managed to get 2 goals past the goal line of the Catalans, but their 2 only goals came in a stunning match, in which they held Barcelona 2-2 at the Estadio Mediterraneo.

Perhaps, Almeria could rely on this famous match result this Saturday when they come face to face with the league leaders; but in the meantime, here is a quick look at the 5 previous meetings between Almeria and FC Barcelona:

28 October, 2007: Barcelona 2-0 Almeria

16 March, 2008: Almeria 2-2 Barcelona

25 October 2008: Barcelona 5-0 Almería

15 March, 2009: Almería 0-2 Barcelona

3 October, 2009: Barcelona 1-0 Almeria

Predictions

Almeria playing against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou in La LigaThe fact that FC Barcelona will be playing as the visitors makes it a little bit difficult to predict an exact score line, but at least, overall information from both sides leaves us with an idea of how this encounter could look like from a general point of view.

Barcelona are expected to throw a cautioning starting line-up against Almeria, with Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, and Dani Alves all expected to start the match at any rate.

Miraculous striker Pedro Rodriguez is not yet assured of a place in the first eleven this weekend for his club, but he could get a feel of the game due to his brilliant performance last weekend.

Almeria will also try to resist the opposing forces by forming a restraining side, partially organized through Pablo Piatti, Albert Crusat, Kalu Uche, Hernán Bernardello, Chico, and Diego Alves.

Naturally, with both teams having to play for specific targets, the game is likely to be quite tempting, even though it might lack of speed and accurate passes on some occasions.

In the end though, if Barcelona do not succeed in destroying their opponents with a flood of goals, they might go for a 2-0 win, or a 2-1 victory – if they concede.

La Liga Standings (top 5) – March 6, 2010

Official logo of La LigaBarcelona still maintain the first place in La Liga 2 points ahead of archrivals Real Madrid, but Almeria definitely need to use more energy if they are to leave the 13th position to enter the first half of the table.

Here is how the standings in La Liga are for the top 5 clubs, as of March 6, 2010:

Barcelona61 points

Real Madrid59 points

Valencia46 points

Sevilla43 points

Mallorca40 points
