Germany vs Argentina Match Preview

By Matias Vulej, Mar 1st 2010
Two major teams will face each other at the doorsteps of the world cup. Maradona has much work to do to define his squad for South Africa, while Germany has to live up to the expectations they arose during the qualification stages.

This will be Diego Maradona's last chance to make up his mind towards the World CupOnly 101 days away from the World Cup, this friendly match will be of utmost importance for both teams, as it could be a preview of what might happen in South Africa.

Germany will be lacking many important players, but nonetheless they find themselves as the favorite on this giant's clash.

After a disastrous qualification, Maradona and his players are eager to show they are ready to reach glory once again. During the last few months Argentina has played a series of friendly matches in which Maradona tested many local players. But the team's performance has left a bitter aftertaste on Diego's lips. As a result, only three local players were called for this match against Germany; Juan Sebastian Veron and Clemente Rodriguez (Both from Estudiantes La Plata) and Nicolas Otamendi (Velez).

It is strange not to see Martin Palermo within the called players, as he has provided team's coach with at least a goal at every match. But with 36 years, it's understandable Maradona is looking for a fresher alternative to enhance Argentina's offensive.

A look at the squad for this match does not unveil many surprises. Javier Pastore has been called to fill in the space Roman Riquelme left since his controversial fight with Maradona. The former Huracan Midfielder has performed outstandingly when he had the chance to play for the Albiceleste, and considering his current performance as one of Palermo's key players, this will be his opportunity to take a place in the National Team.

Jesus Datolo has been recalled by Maradona, giving him another opportunity to show he's worth a place at the World Cup, but a muscular problem is likely to keep him off the pitch.

Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria will have a place within the starting eleven; Pipita has become Real Madrid's main offensive weapon, even sidelining Karim Benzema to the bench.

Di Maria - superstar!Di Maria is leading Benfica to glory, becoming everyone's favorite to be chosen as league's most valuable player. Having just turned 22 years old two weeks ago, he scored first hat-trick last week against Leixoes, and now the subtle interest many major European teams has shown towards the Pibito is likely to reach its peak. During the last few weeks he has been regarded as "Faster than his own shadow" and "Technically impressive".

The third engine of Maradona's offensive will be Lio Messi, who has not yet found his place within Diego's strategy, Higuain, Messi, Di Maria and Jonas Gutierrez will provide the team with the speed and aggressiveness to reach their opponent's goal, while Veron and Mascherano's expertise will be in charge of reducing the spaces and securely conducting the ball. Team's captain Javier Mascherano also managed to score last week for Liverpool, so it seems for this match Argentina's weapons will be coated in venom.

Young German goalkeeper will have to stand against the strikes of the most important Argentinean PlayersGermany has smoothly established itself as a candidate for this edition of the World Cup, leading their group undefeated after 10 matches, in which they suffered only one goal. Rene Adler will be the man between the posts against Argentina, and he has a great burden to bear, as former Germany's goalkeeper Jens Lehman tasted glory after blocking both Roberto Ayala and Esteban Cambiasso's penalty shots in the last encounter between the two teams, which took place at the quarter finals of 2006's world cup.

The two biggest surprises in the squad will be Toni Kroos (playing for the Bayer Leverkusen, being chosen for the second time as footballer of the month in the German League) and Thomas Muller (who has scored 13 goals and assisted on 10 times during the last 33 games for the Bayern Munich), while Michael Ballack, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Marcell Jansen will join the injured Heiko Westermann and Simon Rolfes in the bench.

This match will not be regarded as a friendly match for the Teutons, as Germany's newspaper Bild clearly states "It will be a test of fire towards World's Cup 2010". Many of the players that faced Argentina last time will be on the fields this Wednesday, and this continuity will be one of Germany's main advantages against Argentina, who has tested over one hundred players during the last 23 games.

This match will be the chance for Joachim Löw to even the score against Argentina, as his National Footbal Team has obtained six victories against the Albiceleste, who managed to obtain seven triumphs and three draws.

Netherlands vs USA Match Preview

By Angela Asante, Mar 1st 2010
Ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the 32 participating nations stand the chance of testing themselves with friendly matches. March 3rd will present a great opportunity for teams to test their potential.

USA coach, Bob Bradley Among the several friendly fixtures that will take place on that day, the USA will be playing Holland at the Amsterdam ArenA at 14:30 Eastern Time.

The United States – Bob Bradley testing for the best World Cup roaster

On February 24th, a United States of America team mainly composed of home based players defeated El Salvador 2-1 in a crucial encounter in Florida.

It took a very late goal for Bob Bradley’s inexperienced side to clinch a victory. In the end, the manner in which they won certainly proved how intense the mental power of the team is.

On March 3rd though, it will be the turn of European-based players to make the most of their inclusion in Bob Bradley’s 20-man roster.

Actually, the coach’s selection is comprised of only three non-European based players – one of which is based in Mexico.

Commentating on his squad selection, Bob Bradley declared:

“This is a great opportunity for us to bring many of our European-based players together as we continue to finalize our plans for the World Cup roaster.

“This is the final match before we bring the team together for the World Cup. So, to have a match against one of the top teams in the world like the Netherlands is a big benefit and a good challenge for our group.

“They are expecting a large crowd to turn out for the game, and we are looking forward to an exciting atmosphere in Amsterdam.”

Favorites Netherlands to upset the USA againPlayers of the Netherlands' national football team celebrate.

Surely, Holland will not only try to play good football like they often do. The most important thing for the Oranje will be to secure a victory as they look to find more confidence ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

Wednesday’s encounter will mark the fourth meeting between the USA and Holland in the history of soccer. Now there’s a boost there for the Dutch as previous statistics recall that they won all of their previous games against the United States of America.

Eight years ago, both teams clashed against each other in May as well. The match was a friendly ahead of the 2002 World Cup in Korea-Japan where the USA eventually reached the quarter-finals.

The Oranje were the happy side at the end of the ninety minutes, running away 2-0 victors.

Their last match against the Americans, played on February 18th, 2004, resulted in a victory again; 1-0 it was this time.

Extending their record against the USA to 4-0-0 will ease the pressure on the Dutch who are willing to send the 2010 World Cup trophy home.

Netherlands' 23-man roster – quick info

Coach Van Marwijk has put up a list of 23 players. The big news is that Ron Vlaar will be featuring for the Holland national team for the first time in almost five years.

The 25-year-old’s last inclusion for the Oranje was back in November 2005 when the Dutch faced Italy. Meanwhile, FC Twente’s Wout Bouma and Otman Bakkal from PSV Eindhoven didn’t make the cut. As for Robin van Persie, he is still out of action and recovering from a long term injury.

There will also be a return for Frank Simek. Followers of the United States club might be able to recall that this defender last featured for the Americans in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup final.

Meanwhile, Heath Pearce, Goodson, Jonathan Bornstein, and Robbie Findley are the only players that have been called-up for the Holland game after featuring in the USA’s 2-1 victory over El Salvador on February 25th.

Switzerland vs Uruguay Match Preview

Mar 2nd 2010
Uruguay, who has proven worthy of a place in the World Cup will have a test of fire against one of the European leaders

Uruguay is ready to make their effort against Costa Rica to mean something on their way to South AfricaAfter a harsh qualification, Uruguay finally managed to obtain a place in South Africa, and they know they must make the most of this opportunity not to be left with a bitter taste in their mouth. They've entered a death group, facing World Cup's host South Africa along with an European giant (France) and a Latin American promise yet unable to take off (Mexico). They have booked their place for the World Cup upon a draw last November home, making their victory in the first leg of the South America/CONCACAF play-off be enough to take them to the Cup.

One of the many surprises for this match will be defender's Sebastián Coates, who will take the place of Mauricio Victorino and Alvaro Fernández, both unable to leave Chile after the vicious earthquake that shook the country the last few days.

They'll join Diego Lugano (team's captain) as well as Martín Cáceres off the fields, both still recovering from their injuries. It will take much work to fill the empty spaces these players are leaving behind, specially with so little time to spare, but the Maestro has always been an expert working against the clock. Another name is likely to be loudly heard: Ignacio Gonzalez, who has recovered its best level in the Greek football, and with him Uruguayan's offensive finds its last piece, coupling with young Nicolas Lodeiro (young midfielder who has just joined Ajax's squad after being called for the first time to wear the Celeste against Costa Rica) and Diego Forlan as different alternatives to get the ball where it hurts. It's strange not to see Santiago Silva called for this match, as he's been crowned champion and top scorer of Argentinean League. Nevertheless Sebastian Fernandez (Former Silva's team mate in Banfield) will be sitting in the bank eager to show he deserves a place within the starting eleven.

Switerzland U-17 National Team tasting glory at NigeriaSwitzerland surprised everyone during the qualifications stages, silently standing above France in their group. Now they have a dark future within group H, as it's unlikely to see them comfortable with Spain and Chile lurking around them. But team's expectations fly sky-high since Switzerland's U-17 National Football Team was crowned champion at Nigeria. This will be the ninth time the Helvetics take part in a World Cup, and Ottmar Hitzfeld is confident this will be the first time they get to quarter-finals or even further. It is yet to be seen how will team's coach be able to stand against Uruguay, as he'll be lacking four important players: Team's goalkeeper Diego Benaglio, Benjamin Huggel (from Basilea), Alexander Frei and Blaise Nkufo. But it does not cloud Hitzfeld's judgment: fast as lightning he called Xherdan Shaqir, Jonathan Rossini and Davide Chiumiento to represent their country for the first time in this match. Shaqiri, aged 18, was regarded by the coach as a diamond in the rough, being brought up as a star by Basilea's coach Thorsten Fink, and he has finally been given an oppotunity to lead a whole nation's glory towards the right end
