After losing at St James' Park on Monday, Middlesbrough could be the first team this season to be relegated from the top flight. They are three points adrift of safety with two to play and another defeat could end their 11-year stay in the Premier League.
Boro manager Gareth Southgate takes on his former club knowing his team will be mathematically down if they fail to win and either Newcastle or Hull City win - or if they lose and their rivals pick up at least a point.
Villa are aiming to equal a top-flight club record of 11 away wins in a season. They have already guaranteed a Europa League place and will make sure of fifth place if they win and Everton lose at home to West Ham United.
They will be chasing their sixth win in seven visits to the Riverside and their fourth in succession but they have won only one of their last 14 in all competitions. Boro have won only one of their last nine and have suffered three successive league defeats.
